Passing your theory exam: the complete guide
For many people the theory exam is the first real milestone on the way to a licence. It might sound dull — a lot of rules, signs and situations — but with the right approach it's very doable. In this guide we share a proven study strategy, the ideal practice rhythm and the free tools to prepare yourself well.
Start with a smart study strategy
Cramming everything in one evening doesn't work. Your brain remembers new information much better if you repeat it in small portions across several days. A handy approach:
- Spread the material over several short sessions instead of one long marathon.
- Alternate reading with practice questions — active testing sticks better than passive re-reading.
- Focus extra on the topics you find difficult, rather than repeating what you already know.
- Learn with understanding: grasp why a rule exists, and you'll remember it almost automatically.
Practise, practise, practise
Nothing prepares you better than doing mock exams under realistic conditions. That way you get used to the question format and the time pressure, and discover exactly where you still have questions. With our free online theory trainer you practise as much as you like — free of charge and without an account.

Master the traffic signs
Traffic signs are a fixed and important part of the exam. Recognising the signs quickly wins you both time and confidence. Practise them separately with our free traffic-sign trainer, so you recognise them at a glance — including the signs you come across less often in everyday traffic.
Do you recognise all the signs already? Test yourself with the free traffic-sign trainer.
Booking the exam
Once you feel ready, you book your theory exam directly with the CBR. On cbr.nl you'll find the current fees, available dates and the test locations. Plan your exam for a time when you've been able to practise properly — not too early, but not so late that you've forgotten the material again.
Tip
Just before your exam, do a few full mock exams in a row and watch your score. If you consistently score well above the pass mark, you're ready. If you keep landing just below it, target the parts where you're losing points.
