The interim test (TTT) explained: what does it get you?
The short answer: the interim test (TTT) is a kind of mock exam. You drive a real exam route at the CBR, but you cannot pass through it — what you can earn, though, is an exemption for the special manoeuvres. The test was temporarily paused on 1 April 2025, but since Monday 30 March 2026 it is fully back at the CBR, including in Leiden. Below you can read exactly how it works.
What is the interim test?
The CBR describes the TTT as a kind of mock exam. The test takes 55 minutes in total, of which the test drive itself is about 35 minutes. Afterwards you get immediate advice from the examiner: what was already going well and what you can still work on. Important to know: you cannot pass through the TTT — it is and remains a mock exam with advice. For comparison: the practical exam also takes 55 minutes, with a driving part of about 35 minutes, so the test deliberately feels like a real exam.
What does the exemption get you?
The exemption applies only to the special manoeuvres. If you perform those parts of the test well, smoothly and safely, the examiner will not assess them again at your next practical exam. Nothing changes for the rest of the exam: all the other components are still assessed in full. The TTT is therefore not a fast track to your licence, but it is a way to put part of the exam behind you in advance — and to experience what an exam day at the CBR feels like.
Conditions and validity
- You are at least 16 years and 6 months old.
- You have passed your theory exam and that result is still valid on the day of the test.
- Your driving school books the test with the CBR, after you have authorised them digitally.
- The CBR does not require a minimum number of lessons; whether you're ready is for your instructor to judge.
The exemption is valid until your first practical exam after the test; there is no end date. If you fail that exam, the exemption lapses — the result of your latest interim test is the one that counts. If you take your exam in an automatic, the exemption only applies to an automatic exam. If you take the test in a manual car, you are covered for both manual and automatic.

- Interim test: €143.50.
- Practical exam (car): €143.50.
- Theory exam (car): €50.50 (fixed rate).

Tip
Don't schedule the TTT too early. You get the most out of it when your instructor says you're approaching exam level — then the exemption is also genuinely earned, and the real exam feels less unfamiliar.
